Arturo came into the story in Jacob’s junior year, but has been part of the ROTC program since Jacob transferred to El Paso High School.
When Jacob became battalion commander, Arturo was the brigade commander and the armed drill team commander. He and Jacob became friends when they came to see eye to eye on many areas on running the battalion. One of the items that made their friendship stronger was the dealing with Loraine in the program. They didn’t join forces to get rid of her, but to find a way to handle her and the mistakes she made.
In the middle of the first semester of Jacob’s junior year, Arturo found him beaten up on the football field when he was walking his dog. He helped Jacob and never questioned him on what happened there. At the same time Arturo respected Jacob and never looked down at him because of who he loved. That got Jacob to see he could trust Arturo and he did in many issues and areas.
